About Summer Intensive

The Summer Dance Intensive (SDI) offers technical training and artistic development within the discipline of dance. Participants are exposed to a rigorous curriculum fostering learning and personal growth, along with opportunities to experience the company’s repertoire through workshops and performances. The curriculum includes classes based in Horton, Graham, Ballet, African-Pyragramic, Body Conditioning, Contemporary Movement. The curriculum also features The Continuum, a three step process of self-awareness and growth.

The Summer Intensive program runs from late June through late July providing six to eight hours of training per day, six days a week. The program attracts local, national and international participants. The average age range of participating dancers is 18 to 40. At the conclusion of each Summer Intensive, qualified participants interested in continuing with Deeply Rooted meet with the artistic team to discuss their progress, capabilities, goals and potential placement in the Apprentice or Pre-Professional Programs. Deeply Rooted accepts Summer Dance Intensive students by audition. Although live auditions are encouraged, candidates unable to attend a live audition may apply online.

What levels are admitted into the Summer Intensive?

Deeply Rooted welcomes and encourages dancers of all levels (beginners to professionals) to audition. On the first day of the intensive, dancers will participate in a placement audition and will be placed into their appropriate level for the remainder of their training.

What does a typical day look like?

Students attend two 90 minute technique classes each day followed by rehearsals.

What classes are offered?

All students train in Ballet, Horton- and Graham-based Modern, Contemporary Movement, Traditional African Dance, and repertory rehearsal and coaching sessions.

Deeply Rooted believes that the growth of the artistic self is equally as important as the growth of the technical self. Our program offers the chance for dancers to push themselves and actualize their artistry in conjunction with their technical growth.

Are there performance opportunities?

In an effort to provide a performance that is both reflective of the students technical achievements as well as entertaining, students are guaranteed to perform in AT LEAST one of the following:

  1. Technique Demonstration
  2. Assigned level repertory

All other casting is based on merit at the discretion of the Summer Intensive Director, choreographer and/or Deeply Rooted Artistic Team.

Are scholarships available?

Yes. Deeply Rooted offers a limited number of merit-based and work study scholarships.

What are additional ways I can support my tuition?

Funding from Schools and Civic/Community/Charitable Organizations: Many universities and high schools offer funding and grants for independent study and educational enhancement. Deeply Rooted is not an accredited institution. However, if you provide the proper paperwork, we can validate your training. We will verify the coursework you receive while here in technique, choreography, and artistic growth. Organizations such as sororities, fraternities, the Links, etc. have funded students in the past.

Get a Job: Get a weekend job and dedicate that income to your tuition. It is also possible to work in Chicago during the day, as the intensive hours are in the evening.

Plan a fundraiser: Students have held performance fundraisers and snack sales during school breaks. Create a crowd-funding page for online donations.

Be creative: Remember – where there is a will, there is a way!

Does Deeply Rooted provide Summer Intensive students with summer housing?

Deeply Rooted does not provide housing for the Summer Intensive. However, our studios are located in downtown Chicago at 17 N. State Street, making us easily accessible by public transportation.

Students receive a list of housing resources in the registration packet upon acceptance. Many of our students choose to stay at the University Center (chicagosummerhousing.com) and Hosteling International Chicago (hichicago.org), as they are within walking distance of the studio.

Do you provide chaperones for minors?

No. Deeply Rooted is not responsible for minors before and after their daily classes and rehearsals.

What is the refund policy?

Deeply Rooted has a no refund policy.
