SUMMER DANCE INTENSIVE
ABOUT
Deeply Rooted’s Summer Dance Intensive (SDI) offers technical training and artistic development within the discipline of dance. Participants experience a rigorous curriculum fostering learning and personal growth, along with opportunities to learn the company’s repertory through workshops and performances. The curriculum includes classes based in Horton, Graham, ballet, and contemporary movement. The curriculum also features The Continuum, a series of guided, conversations on self-awareness and personal growth informed by each participant’s creativity and artistic process.
Students are selected via audition (in person or video submission) for youth and pre-professional programs. Once admitted into the program, students may register online.

ADVANCED REPERTORY WORKSHOP
Deeply Rooted Dance Theater's Advanced Repertory Workshop is a six week program
for students ages 17+ that provides advanced and merit scholarship students the
opportunity to immerse themselves in learning and perfecting repertory choreographed
by select national and/or international choreographers. This accelerated training
program offers daily coaching to gain the strength, purity of line, musicality,
self confidence, and focus critical to transforming classroom technique into
artistry. Students will complete their training within our four-week program ending
in culminating performances.

A non-refundable deposit of $200 is due two weeks after acceptance in order to
reserve your place in the program. Full tuition is $1,950.00. Early bird payment
discounts are listed below, and tuition must be paid in full by the deadline listed
in order to qualify for the discounted rate.

Deeply Rooted Dance Theater’s Pre-Professional/Professional division is a four week
program that provides training in ballet, modern, African-based techniques, and
repertory workshops led by Deeply Rooted artistic staff, company members, and guest
artists. The program fosters artistic growth through a curriculum that develops
technical skill and performance readiness. This program is designed for dancers ages
16 and older. Students will complete their training within our four-week program
ending in culminating performances.

MERIT SCHOLARSHIP
Deeply Rooted Summer Dance Intensive program offers full and partial scholarships in
both our Youth and Pre-professional divisions. Financial assistance is provided for
summer training to students who show the highest potential for a professional dance
career. These students must exhibit not only proficiency within their technique but
the ability to be a poetic and compelling mover.
Pre-professional Division scholarship recipients are required to attend the Advance
Repertory Workshop program (6 weeks) as well as participate in regularly scheduled
scholarship duties.
Our Deeply Rooted Dance Education team has been fortunate to receive many strong
applications from high qualifying candidates, making it that much more difficult of a
decision. As we would like to provide scholarships to all of our talented students, we
are only able to provide a certain number per year.
All applicants may apply using the link below. The deadline for the 2024 Summer
Scholarship submission is April 14, 2024.

WORK STUDY PROGRAM
Deeply Rooted Dance Theater Summer Dance Intensive (SDI) Work Study program is a non-paid four week opportunity for dancers (ages 18 and older) seeking to gain experience in arts administration while participating in the company’s pre-professional summer dance intensive program. During the four week program students are required to work daily with Deeply Rooted administrative staff as well as observe and participate in technique classes and rehearsal process. Work study students are required to support administrative staff during the SDI culminating performance. Interested students apply below. Merde to All!

Deeply Rooted welcomes and encourages dancers of all levels (beginners to professionals) to audition. On the first day of the intensive, dancers will participate in a placement audition and will be placed into their appropriate level for the remainder of their training.

Students attend two 90 minute technique classes each day followed by rehearsals for the culminating performances.

All students train in Ballet, Horton- and Graham-based Modern, Contemporary Movement,Traditional African Dance, repertory rehearsal, and coaching sessions.
Deeply Rooted believes that the growth of the artistic self is equally as important as the growth of the technical self. Our program offers the chance for dancers to push themselves and actualize their artistry in conjunction with their technical growth.

Yes. Deeply Rooted offers a limited number of merit-based scholarships. Please indicate if you’d like to be considered for a scholarship when registering for your audition.

Funding from Schools and Civic/Community/Charitable Organizations: Many universities and high schools offer funding and grants for independent study and educational enhancement. Deeply Rooted is not an accredited institution. However, if you provide the proper paperwork, we can validate your training. We will verify the coursework you receive while here in technique, choreography, and artistic growth. Organizations such as sororities, fraternities, the Links, etc. have funded students in the past.
Consider a part-time job: Look for a weekend job and dedicate that income to your tuition.
Plan a fundraiser: Students have held performance fundraisers and snack sales during school breaks. Create a crowd-funding page for online donations.
Be creative: Remember – where there is a will, there is a way!

Deeply Rooted does not provide housing for the Summer Intensive. However, our studios are located in downtown Chicago at 17 N. State Street, making us easily accessible by public transportation.
Many of our students choose to stay at the University Center (chicagosummerhousing.com) and Hosteling International Chicago (hichicago.org), as they are within walking distance of the studio.
