Cook County Arts Collective | Private Performance
November 14 | 4:00 PM - 6:00 PMFree
Cook County Arts Collective will welcome members of Deeply Rooted Dance Theater into Division 5 of the Cook County Department of Corrections to facilitate a day of dance and dialogue with residents of THRIVE, the jail’s internal drug recovery program.
Female detainees will be invited to dance with company members Dominique Atwood, Rebekah Kuzma, Marlayna Locklear, and Nyemah Stuart, and to experience excerpts from classic DRDT repertoire, Essence. This showing will be followed by discussion and reflection time with Artistic Director Nicole Clarke-Springer, Kevin Iega Jeff, and Cook County Arts Collective founder Jane Sawyer.
CCAC looks forward to creating space for joyful movement and connection between these talented artists and the women we have met inside since first beginning dance programming at Cook County Jail in December 2018. We are honored to be joined in this endeavor by Deeply Rooted Dance Theater, a company that has been essential to the growth of countless artists who seek to use the uniquely transformative power of dance as a tool for social change. We add our voices to those working against the racist and inhumane Prison Industrial Complex, and we intend to build relationships through dance that foster authentic connections with members of our community affected by mass incarceration.
